The coating of granules is a specialist process. It requires specially designed mixers that allow the incorporation of liquids into the process.
The choice for the most suitable technique requires the minimising of inter particle shear. Too much shear will cause the granule to break down and increase the amount of fines in the end-product.
In order to coat granules in a continuous way we have two possible process routes available. The first one being the rotary drum blender from TR Boone and secondly the continuous fluid bed dryer from Hosokawa Shugi.
Both routes offer the option of creating a coating around the individual granules by adding a liquid or melt to the process.
This type of coating is often applied when the surface of the granule requires protection or if the flowing capabilities of the product need to be improved.
The coating however can also be applied in order to mask an odour or taste or to protect the product against light, air or moisture influences. Other reasons can be a slowing down of the rate of dissolving or the systematic release of active ingredients or even to increase the visual attraction of the product.
We offer to coat granules in this continuous manner for you on our rotating drum (JR Boone) or in our Fluid bed dryer (Hosokawa Shugi).

Custom Powders has available two techniques that are suitable for the continuous coating of granules. The choice for a specific coating technique strongly depends on how effective the coating and spread of the liquid need to be, as well as the quantities that require processing, the required temperature, the amount of liquid
that needs to be added and the specific characteristics of the granule (See also the batch coating of granules).
The continuous coating of granules is possible in our rotating drum coater from the company JR Boone. As the name indicates this is a drum that rotates slowly around its own axes and wherein the product is gently tumbled around. This piece of equipment is specially designed for adding and mixing a liquid with a product with minimal shear. The blender is set up to operate on a continuous basis.
The gentle way of mixing makes this blender very suitable for the coating of granules. The granules are fed into the drum where a liquid is then sprayed in, in such a way that the liquid is effectively distributed over the granules.
The other available process route for the continuous coating of granules is in our fluid bed dryer from the company Hosokawa Shugi. This is a continuous fluid bed dryer where the granules are fluidized and transported through the bed by moving air. While moving through the machine a liquid can be sprayed onto the granules in order to provide them with a coating layer. The advantage of this process is that the granules can be coated and dried (cooled) at the same time in one piece of equipment.
