Wet Granulation | HĂĽttlin FB Dryer

Within wet granulation we distinguish between several different techniques. The Lödige CB-30, The Shugi Flexomix and the Henschell are processors that create granules by the mixing of powders with liquids/binders under mechanical shear. The granules are created by mechanical working of the ingredients thus creating relative firm and dense granules. However, they are less dense and more porous than granules created via a dry granulation technique.

The technique we now introduce is a fluid bed agglomeration/granulation route whereby powders and liquids are brought together in a fluid bed by swirling warm/hot air. A liquid (binder) is sprayed into a moving bed of particles that will start sticking together. By heating the air the liquid bridges between the individual particles will dry out and solidify and thus create stable granules. The granules produced this way will have a structure that is even more open and porous than that produced via the processor route.

The Hüttlin fluid bed dryer (1200 litre) is a multifunctional piece of equipment that is part of our batch agglomeration unit in Crewe (UK). What makes this unit unique is that this machine is very versatile; it is a process that can be well controlled and that very quickly can produce commercial quantities. It is best suited to campaigns ranging from 60 – 200 T or more, because the clean down costs would be disproportionately high for smaller campaigns.

Are you interested in an agglomeration process that offers you a very high level of control and gives you the opportunity to very precisely produce granules within a very homogenous size range?

What happens with fluid bed agglomeration is that granules are built up from individual particles by sticking them together by means of a liquid (binder). Granules produced in this manner will have a relatively open and porous structure and have a relatively light density. That makes these granules very suitable when the end application requires good dissolving and dispersing characteristics.

The Hüttlin 1200 Multifunctional fluid bed dryer is a machine that we operate from our facilities in Crewe (UK). This machine originally was developed for pharmaceutical applications but can also be applied for different industries. The machine we have in Crewe is one of the largest in Europe and we have chosen this “multi-processor” for its enormous versatility and the excellent control it offers for all the different process applications. With this machine we can offer coating, drying, agglomerating and some very specific spray drying applications. The typical particle size range lies between 200 and 600 micron.
The main advantage of this machine is that it offers more flexibility than other fluid bed dryers in processing very fine and rather cohesive powders.

The high quality of the machine, in combination with the process control it offers, make it very suitable for the processing of consecutive batches in large campaigns for products with a relative high value.
